Sign Of The Times is a painted work by Jonnie Rodriguez at APT Gallery. A pale-blue field sits inside a deep red border, bringing together the colour of a surgical mask and the familiar framing of TIME magazine. Its proposition is direct: the mask, the blue, as Person of the Year.

A portrait without a face

A magazine cover usually gives recognition a face. Here, the centre is occupied by colour. The blue points to an object that became part of everyday public life during COVID-19: something worn across faces, encountered in transit, at work and in the spaces between people. The painting gives that shared visual detail the scale and attention of a portrait.

The red border makes the proposition readable before any explanatory text. It carries the authority and familiarity of an editorial frame, while the centre withholds the usual photograph and headline. The work asks what could stand for a year when one small object became inseparable from its daily routines.

Colour as a record of a moment

The blue surface is visibly painted. Pale streaks and shifts in coverage keep it from becoming a perfectly uniform colour sample. That material variation matters: the image is concise, but looking closely reveals the hand and the time involved in making it. The border contains a surface that remains active.

The title moves between a familiar expression and the magazine reference. Together, title, colour and framing make a compact memorial to the visual conditions of the period. The “Person of the Year” idea belongs to the artwork’s metaphor. A colour associated with a shared object occupies the place where an individual portrait might otherwise appear.
