GOD DAMN is Jonnie Rodriguez’s visual response to Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. at APT Gallery. Fourteen tracks become a sequence of images, bringing song titles into contact with biblical narratives, historical paintings and the visual language of stained glass.
Each piece starts with a track from DAMN. and follows its themes into a biblical story, a passage of scripture and a selected image. The red lettering at the centre names the track. It keeps the musical reference visible as the viewer moves between the song, the story and the artwork. The collection follows this relationship across all fourteen tracks, from BLOOD. to DUCKWORTH.
Scripture gives each pairing a second text to consider. Its role is to sit beside the artwork, making comparison possible. The pairings are Rodriguez’s artistic construction; they do not claim to reveal a definitive biblical key to Lamar’s album. That space between reference and interpretation is where the collection asks the viewer to spend time.
The stained-glass direction brings the collection into the visual register of a church window. Dark divisions turn gestures, garments and architecture into connected shapes. Colour appears to hold light. A scene can be read from a distance as a strong arrangement of forms, then examined closely as a network of smaller details.
These treatments are digital interpretations. The source paintings remain a separate part of the project, with artwork titles, artists and source references provided where established. Keeping that distinction visible lets the viewer trace the transformation without confusing the historical painting with the contemporary treatment. Each track page brings the image and its accompanying narrative together; the collection page holds all fourteen in sequence.
